Natalie Wood died tragically in 1981 after allegedly falling overboard from the yacht she was on with her husband, Robert Wagner, but the mystery surrounding her death is equal to the one surrounding her life; now, the National Enquirer claims to have uncovered a journal written by the actress that details an “explosive” affair with actor Warren Beatty, which may have led to a suicide attempt on her part.

“Neither Warren nor I was ready for a permanent relationship. Although our romance lasted approximately two years, our affair was a ‘collision’ — a combination three-ring circus and five-alarm fire,” Wood allegedly wrote in a journal.

According to a 2002 book about Beatty’s life by Ellis Amburn, Wood’s breaking point came when Beatty allegedly tried to seduce Natalie’s 16-year old sister, which was the actress’s breaking point. She later reportedly overdosed on pills, but recovered after a friend rushed her to the hospital.

In recent years, the investigation surrounding Wood’s death has been reopened after new information came to light about the night she fell from the boat. Earlier this month, news broke that a former FBI agent claims he and Natalie were in love, and that Wagner had found out about their affair, which caused a violent argument between the couple the night she died. Wagner has been suspected by some as having a hand in her death in the past but was never charged; after the autopsy report was given a second look in 2013, officials declared the marks on Wood’s body–which was found floating in the waters of Catalina Island–to be inconsistent with those from a fall.

“The location of the bruises, the multiplicity of the bruises, lack of head trauma, or facial bruising support bruising having occurred prior to entry in the water,” reads the amended report.

“Mr Wagner has fully co-operated over the last 30 years in the investigation of the accidental drowning of his wife,” his lawyer said in a statement.
