For those old enough to remember, the events that took place between Olympic figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding changed things forever.

Because before then, a big scandal, especially in the sport’s world, didn’t get the same amount of attention that it gets now, and the Kerrigan-Harding scandal marked the first time the media covered this kind of story pretty much around the clock.

To refresh your memory, Harding allegedly got her then husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt to break Kerrigan’s right leg so she couldn’t compete, which would of obviously given Harding a better chance of making the Olympic team back then.

On Sunday, NBC ran a one hour documentary about the 1994 scandal, and Kerrigan said that she actually pities Harding at this point.

“You feel bad for her, to not have that stable home,” she said. “I am so lucky. It wasn’t easy. I remember counting quarters and my parents counting money to buy groceries. But I lived in one place with two parents and it was stable. I had grandparents two houses away. It’s not like I was a princess. I happened to have good posture so I looked the part, I guess.”

In addition, Kerrigan says that she’s ready to move on from the scandal, especially since it was 20 years ago.

“But I hope now, not just for my sake, but her sake too, she has a family, let’s move on,” she stated. “You have to allow people the chance to get on with their lives and to be better and learn from mistakes. But I don’t feel like this film resolved anything for me. I mean, I was attacked. I was the victim.”

The 44 year old also said the scandal could have been worse, because after reading an FBI report back then Harding and her crew planned to kill her, so she feels extremely lucky just to be alive.
