The Miss Universe Pageant on Sunday night included a gaffe on behalf of host Steve Harvey that most people have by now forgiven–and maybe even started to forget. Not so those in Colombia, however. Miss Colombia was inadvertently crowned Miss Universe, then had to give the crown back so the real Miss Universe–Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach–could be crowned. Steve Harvey was embarrassed and admitted his mistake on the air.

Miss Colombia cried, but then accepted the situation for what it was–she was the first runner-up. She even spoke with reporters, saying, “Everything happens for a reason.”
The people of Colombia aren’t as forgiving, however, according to Time magazine.
“They stole the crown from us and destroyed the dreams of a country,” Gutiérrez’s cousin, Álvaro Arévalo, told the Bogotá newspaper El Tiempo. “They exposed her to public humiliation.”
Some comments on social media took on a sinister air.

Colombia apparently takes their beauty pageants quite seriously, and when Miss Colombia was crowned Miss Universe, they celebrated. That celebration swiftly turned to dismay as the crown was removed from her head and placed on the real Miss Universe winner’s.
Miss Colombia is now the recipient of much sympathy, and some believe she may wind up more well-known and popular than the actual Miss Universe.
