Melky Cabrera, outfielder for the San Francisco Giants, has been suspended for fifty games as of this afternoon, after officials discovered he’d tested positive for testosterone. This is his first season with the Giants.

Cabrera previously played for the Kansas City Royals, the Atlanta Braves, and the Yankees before signing on with the Giants, and some would say this has been his best season yet. He has the second-highest batting average in the National League and was elected MVP of the 2012 All-Star Game. He released a statement today regarding the drug test and apologized for letting down his teammates. The Giants are currently tied with the L.A. Dodgers for first place in the National League West.

“My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used,” Cabrera said. “I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”

Cabrera’s suspension is to be held without pay and is effective immediately, meaning he will miss the rest of this season and, more than likely, the beginning of next season.
