No one matched the Mega Millions numbers last night, which increases the total jackpot to $115 million.

The winning numbers for the November 5 drawing were, 2-11-42-64-74 and Mega Ball: 2. The estimated jackpot for this drawing was $99 million. The closest anyone got to winning the jackpot was a player in California who matched five out of the six numbers. That person, who has not been named, won $1 million.

For those of you who do not know how the Mega Millions game works, each ticket costs $1 and players pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers (five different numbers from 1 to 75 and one number from 1 to 15). You can also choose to have the numbers picked for you using the easy pick option. If you match all six numbers, you win the jackpot. However, there are other ways to win besides the jackpot.

Below is a list of the top ten Mega Millions payouts:

1 $656 million 3/30/2012 3 Kansas, Illinois, Maryland
2 $390 million 3/6/2007 2 Georgia, New Jersey
3 $380 million 1/4/2011 2 Idaho, Washington
4 $336 million 8/28/2009 2 California, New York
5 $330 million 8/31/2007 4 Maryland, New Jersey, Texas, Virginia
6 $319 million 3/25/2011 1 New York
7 $315 million 11/15/2005 1 California

9 $275 million 2/22/2008 1 Georgia
10 $270 million 2/28/2006 1 Ohio

The last person to hit the jackpot was Virginia native, Lewis Howard, when he matched all six numbers during the drawing on May 17. Howard spilt the $198 million jackpot with another player from New Jersey who also matched all six numbers. Howard says he chose his numbers at random, and the winning numbers were, 11-15-35-43-49 and Mega Ball 41. He says he really wasn’t that excited when he won a whopping $99 million. “I thought, ‘Okay, so I have all six numbers,’” he later said. “I really wasn’t that excited.”

The Mega Millions game is played on Tuesdays and Fridays. The next drawing for the $115 million jackpot will be on Friday, November 8. Don’t forget to buy your ticket!
