Louis Vuitton has decided to take a different direction in its latest set of ads by featuring a video game character to serve as the model for the campaign.
Creative director Nicolas Ghesquière’s let the cat out of the bag on Instagram that Lightning, the heroine of the Final Fantasy franchise, will be the star of these Spring/Summer 2016 images.
As The New York Observer noted, it’s highly unlikely that Louis Vuitton’s clientele is not all very familiar with the video game, but Ghesquière said that his Spring/Summer collection was inspired by the intersection of our lives online and our real lives. Also featured in the predominately visual show were references to anime, sci-fi movies and Minecraft. He also included references to anime, sci-fi movies and Minecraft.
“I was thinking about this digital frontier, which I wanted to combine in harmony with the world of Louis Vuitton – the craft, the wardrobe,” he told Dazed Digital. “It’s an evocation of cyber, of what comes from digital – these characters or girls that are speaking to their generation.”
The images for the show and campaign were created by a collaborative effort between Square Enix, the developer of Final Fantasy, and character designer Tetsuya Nomura.

Lightning, coiffed in pink, is featured in straight-from-the-runway clothing that includes a sheer ruffled shirt with a lattice detail and a pair of teeny silk shorts.
For several shots, Ghesquière used Korean actress Doona Bae to recreate the Final Fantasy/Louis Vuitton look in real life.
