The next twisted game from the mind of SUDA51 will hit stores this week, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is giving gamers one last preview of all the zombie-carving mayhem with a brand-new launch trailer. The game features a high school cheerleader, Juliet, who shows up to class on her 18th birthday, only to find that the zombie apocalypse has started. Armed with her trusty pink-heart chainsaw and a suggestive cheerleader outfit, she must save the world from an invasion of zombie rock lords. It’s as grindhouse as a video game gets.
The game was created by Goichi Suda, the developer whose last game, Shadows of the Damned, perfectly illustrates his juvenile sense of humor and gameplay. While his games are often silly and crass, they are generally well-received and a blast to play. Lollipop Chainsaw looks to continue this trend with hack-and-slash combo fighting and indiscreet character animations for Juliet. Though SUDA51 directed the game, James Gunn, the writer and director famous for writing Troma movies, Slither, and the Dawn of the Dead remake, is credited as the writer for Lollipop chainsaw. SUDA51 brought in some A-list voice talent for the game, casting Tara Strong as Juliet and Michael Rooker as Vikke.
The entire project looks to be over-the-top, yet incredibly fun. It’s the type of game that is sure to spark protests from parents groups in the U.S., but it’s the exactly the type of game needed to lighten up an industry that is quickly becoming corporate and playing to an over-broad audience. Gamers burdened with the heavy stories that have been coming along recently, such as those in Mass Effect 3 and Diablo III, could use a groaning laugh and a few gallons of blood.
Take a look at the launch trailer below and prepare for the game’s release today in the U.S. and on June 15 in the UK.
