  • If there’s a more natural pairing than the subject of zombies and Internet users, I’m not sure what it is. The two subjects were seemingly made for each other. Sure, things like ninjas and pirates have been popular subjects on the Internet, but zombies are right there as well, especially since the explosion of social media.

This latest story perhaps took a hint from the CDC traffic bait blog post concerning a potential zombie outbreak, a concerned citizen in England’s Leicester City wrote the city council and asked if the city was prepared in case the unthinkable happens. The city council’s honest answer is probably has more truth to it than the CDC’s rosy outlook.

If the council is to be believed, Leicester City is NOT prepared for a potential zombie attack. In fact, it’s doubtful many places are, because, frankly, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, er, a zombie apocalypse outbreak. Maybe the city council in question could consult the CDC

As indicated, the Leicester City city council’s admittance was a result of a letter from a resident of the city, which the BBC reprinted:

    Dear Leicester City Council,

Can you please let us know what provisions you have in place in the event of a zombie invasion? Having watched several films it is clear that preparation for such an event is poor and one that councils throughout the kingdom must prepare for.

Please provide any information you may have.

    Yours faithfully,

    Concerned Citizen

Was this letter a serious query or was the author simply being playful? Whatever the case, it didn’t stop the city council from responding with a playful no:

[Lynn Wyeth, head of information governance] said she was unaware of any specific reference to a zombie attack in the council’s emergency plan, however some elements of it could be applied if the situation arose.

If their plan is anything like the CDC’s, where they applied other disaster-preparedness guides with the fresh paint of zombie popularity, then yes, their plan would probably fit at least some of the potential problems a horde of flesh-eating zombies could cause. Of course, guns are harder to get in England, so maybe they should just follow the lead shown in Shaun of the Dead.

If that fails, or if the local pub is full, perhaps the underground silo approach from Day of the Dead will be effective. Leicester City residents aren’t too far from RAF Lakenheath, a nuclear-capable US Air Force base located in the Suffolk area of England, provided the security police would allow them access.

Of course, those guys would probably be too busy dealing with zombies to care about who gets on or off the base.

If Lakenheath is out of the question, maybe the 28 Days Later approach would work, instead — that is, try finding a British military outpost to protect you. A word of warning, however: If your survivor party has women in it, make sure said outpost does too.
