There’s a new Lego creation currently making rounds on the interwebs, and it was done by a delightfully creative–and patient–16-year old.

When Paul Vermeesch decided he wanted to make something cool with Legos, he figured he should do something that hadn’t been done a thousand times. And even though Star Wars characters have seen their share of the Lego world, Vermeesch managed to take it to the next level. Or, the next several levels.

Mixing Star Wars with Lego architecture with a drawing by M.C. Escher, Vermeesch created his masterpiece on paper first to get a feel for the unique angles and perspectives he would need to create. The rest came about over a six-month period.

“I built a rough scale test in Lego’s Digital Designer and first realized how many bricks would be required that I didn’t have,” he said. “By that point there was no turning back, and I began ordering the bricks I would need. It was also at this point that I decided I wanted the model to be lit from the inside. This complicated things a little bit, but the added effort most definitely paid off.”

Using somewhere between 2 and 3,000 bricks, Vermeesch built a fantastic montage of three of his favorite things, blending art with nerdism so seamlessly that he’s garnered some envy as photos of the finished piece are shared around the web.
