Back in September, Square Enix reacquainted us with its odd, yet charming, mashup of Final Fantasy and Disney with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix. The game included HD remakes of Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and the movies from Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. Now Square is bringing the other three titles in the Kingdom Hearts saga to PlayStation 3 this year.
Square Enix released a new trailer this week for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix that features gameplay from all three titles that are included in the set – Kingdom Hearts II, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded. Like in the past compilation, the first two titles are complete HD upgrades while Re:Coded is merely a collection of cutscenes from the original DS game.
So, how does it look? Well, it looks like Kingdom Hearts II, but in full HD. All the melodrama, friendship and DiZ that you can take are back with better visuals. As for Birth by Sleep, the best title in the Kingdom Hearts franchise will hopefully get the treatment it deserves.
With this release, all but one of the current Kingdom Hearts games has been remade for HD consoles. What about Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance then? According to series creator Tetsuya Nomura, Square Enix hasn’t exactly figured out what to do yet with the 3DS title. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Re:Coded were reduced to simple movie collections as they didn’t want to deal with converting touch screen controls to the PS3. Kingdom Hearts 3D extensively uses the touch screen so any port would have to take that into account, and fans wouldn’t be that happy with a single “game” that just included the cutscenes.
Anyway, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix will be out in 2014 exclusively for the PS3. As for Kingdom Hearts III, it will be done when it’s done.
