Live! with Kelly and Michael host Kelly Ripa recently admitted that she might have some hoarder genes in her blood.
The 43-year-old spoke to Vanity Fair about how difficult it is for her and her family of five to pack up and move out of their Soho penthouse due to the fact that she likes to hang on to so many of her childrens’ mementos.
“It is a bit of a nightmare,” she said. “Mark likes to throw everything away, and I want to save everything for when the kids are older one day.”
Ripa, along with her husband, actor Mark Consuelos, have been trying to sell their home at 76 Crosby Street for over a year.
The 7,000 square-foot apartment, last listed for $24.5 million, includes 12-foot ceilings, marble, milled wood, a Jacuzzi, and a huge array of windows.
“This was really more of a family apartment, and most families want to live in Tribeca or maybe the West Village, rather than right in the middle of Soho,” a broker said. “I know of some very high-net-worth individuals who went through there looking for, you know, like a real Soho pad.”
Ripa and family finally found a buyer, meaning Ripa is having to go through everything she has held on to for many years.
“You know, [the kids] have their things, like their first report card, so it’s a constant struggle as to what we should toss versus what we should save,” she said.
Although the children are all grown (ages 17, 13, and 11), the family still has an entire closet filled with various baby items and small children’s things.
“For some reason, I have a crib and a stroller and a Pack ’n Play, and a little kitchen,” Ripa laughed. “Right now, basically, David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris’s kids come over and play with everything. Like, that’s what it’s there for, just to get them to bring the kids over.”
But is Ripa a hoarder? Most likely not. She simply sounds like a sentimental mother … with enough income and storage space for it not to matter.
