"Today" host Kathie Lee Gifford made a horribly awkward mistake on Wednesday's show, which cost her and anyone watching a great deal of embarrassment: apparently, she wasn't aware that guest Martin Short's wife passed away two years ago and kept asking him questions about how they keep their marriage fresh after so many years together.

To his credit, Short didn't make her feel bad by pointing out her mistake, instead answering as though she were still alive.

Kathie Lee is known for her wild and erratic antics on the show, often getting skewered by Joel McHale on the E! clip show "The Soup". Some episodes are like a train wreck; you don't want to watch but you can't look away.

Gifford did eventually realize her mistake and tweeted about it later, offering an apology to Short.

I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful.
