Apparently the new fad around Hollywood is to prank call the police and send them to the homes of celebrities, and the Kardashians are just the latest victims in a string of fake emergency calls. The practice is called “swatting” and has affected the likes of Tom Cruise, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus, to name a few.
The famous reality family got a shock when several officers showed up at their door, saying there had been a report of someone being shot at the residence. Kim, who wasn’t home at the time, tweeted about the incident:
Just got a call from my mom telling me about this prank call that someone was shot in their home & 15 swat team & 3 helicopters showed up!
These prank calls are NOT funny! People can get arrested for this! I hope they find out who is behind this. Its dangerous & not a joke!
The L.A.P.D. isn’t too happy about it, either, and say they are lobbying to make these calls a federal offense. Not only are they a huge waste of time and expense, but faux emergency calls take officers away from people who actually need help.
L.A. County Sheriff spokesperson Steve Whitmore released a statement about the call, saying, “What we want to do is have the legislature turn up the heat on these people. This is a serious, serious crime.”
