Jewel fixes teeth in order to portray country legend June Carter Cash in an upcoming biopic for Lifetime, according to On The Red Carpet. The musician, who is known for her famously crooked smile, had her teeth temporarily “straightened” in order to tackle the role. In addition to the new grill, Jewel also sports brown hair and blue contacts, which, like the teeth, will be ditched as soon as the movie has wrapped production.
Although the singer’s imperfect smile has caused her much criticism in the past, she’s refused to fix her flaws, which, of course, is very admirable. In an industry that seems obsessed with perfection, Jewel continues to stand her ground. Had she decided to correct this problem years ago, she may have missed out on an opportunity to co-star in director Ang Lee’s 1999 period piece “Ride with the Devil”, which also featured Tobey Maguire and Skeet Ulrich.
“I asked Ang, ‘Why Me? You could’ve had anyone you wanted,” Jewel explained in a 2010 interview. “And he said, ‘You have period teeth.’ So I got the job because I was the only actress in Hollywood who hadn’t gotten her teeth fixed!”
The musician’s upcoming project, “Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash”, is filming in Atlanta this summer. The made-for-TV movie is based on the memoir by John Carter Cash, June’s son. In addition to Jewel, the film also co-stars Matt Ross of “Big Love” and “American Horror Story” fame.
In order to show off her new mouth to the entire world, Jewel tweeted an image of the dental caps. The reactions to this public display of temporary dentistry can be found below.
