Stephen Jackson, a forward for the San Antonio Spurs, recently used Twitter as a means to vent about another player. But unfortunately for him, social media sites are often the cause of trouble for those in the spotlight, and once his post went live, the Spurs’ manager and the NBA decided to impose a fine.
The tweet was about Oklahoma City’s Serge Ibaka and read, “Somebody tell serg Abaka. He aint bout dis life. Next time he run up on me im goin in his mouth. That’s a promise. He doin 2 much.”
The tweet was soon deleted, but too many eyes had already seen it. Jackson has now been ordered to pay $25,000 for issuing a “hostile environment”, according to a statement released by the team’s manager.
“The recent public comments made by Stephen Jackson are absolutely unacceptable, cannot be tolerated and do not reflect the standards held by the San Antonio Spurs,” Spurs general manager RC Buford said.
Jackson later apologized for his statements.
“I apologize to Serge Ibaka, the NBA, and to all my fans for the comments I made. It was unprofessional and childish. I’m not a thug just a man who speaks his mind. It was not appropriate. I do apologize. Only a man can admit when he’s wrong.”
