LEGO has proven itself to be one of the most versatile toys ever made with people building everything from working jet engines to Turing Machines. It helps that the LEGO company is extremely supportive of these endeavors and creates software to help power them. The LEGO Mindstorms brand is still one of the most popular LEGO brands for enthusiasts as it allows them to program machines built with LEGO bricks.

That leads us to today’s video of a printer built out of LEGO bricks. It’s not really a printer, but rather a drawing machine. The computer controls when the attached marker is lowered onto the paper and the machine moves the paper in time with the pen to write out messages.

It’s a little slow and can’t perform complex print jobs, but it’s still pretty amazing. The power of LEGO at work is something to behold. It’s really only a matter of time before we get a 3D printer made out of LEGO bricks. There’s already a 3D printer can print out the pieces it needs to build a new one. With LEGO, it would be the ultimate self-replicating 3D printer.

Until we see a future where everything is made out of LEGO, we’ll just have to settle for this. Let’s just pray that the future won’t suddenly reverse course and put us on the path towards Mega Bloks.
