“Hunger Games” Tops Box Office Grossing $161.1 Million

    Millions of people went to their local theaters to find out what was going to happen to the notorious Katniss Everdeen. At the end of the movies first week, it had brought in a whopping $161.1 million domestically and $307.73 million worldwide. Not only did it beat out the first movie in the series that grossed $152.5 million in 2012, it also set an all-time November record. The studio estimates that Catching Fire grossed $23.5 million just on Thursday night and Friday morning.

    “The strength of the ‘Hunger Games’ franchise is not to be underestimated,” said the chief analyst as Boxoffice.com, Phil Contrino. “This property has clearly expanded its fan base in a big way both at home and overseas.”

    The sequel, starring Jennifer Lawrence, makes the fourth highest-grossing opening weekend of all time. The highest record is held by Marvel’s The Avengers with $207.4 million, followed by Iron Man: 3 with $174.1 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $169.1 million.

    10. Dallas Buyers Club: $2.77 million

    The second film follows Katniss as she is, once again, thrown into the, action-packed, Hunger Games that have her fighting for her life. According to IMDb, Katniss “Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.”
