  • Goalkeeper Hope Solo broke the U.S. record for career shutouts Saturday during an 8-0 victory over Mexico in Sandy, Utah.

With the win on Saturday, the former Washington Huskies standout broke Briana Scurry’s record. Scurry played from 1994-2008 and had 71 shutouts in 173 matches. As for Solo, her record comes after 154 matches since 2000.

“It’s been a long journey,” said the 33-year-old Solo. “A lot of tears, a lot of blood, a lot of sweat. Some heartaches, some incredible moments. It’s crazy to think it’s been close to 15 years.”

Solo — whose domestic violence trial, stemming from an alleged incident that took place at her sister’s home in June, is set for Nov. 4 — plays for Seattle Reign FC of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The team continues its 86-match winning streak, thanks in part to fellow teammates Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach, who both scored twice during Saturday’s match.

“It was a pretty slow start for the first five or eight minutes, but after we got going I thought we played well. I thought we found width really well, found space in behind really well and exposed them and their weaknesses,” said Morgan.

With Saturday’s victory, the U.S. team extended its all-time record against Mexico to 28-1-1. The two teams will meet again Thursday in Rochester, New York, and will be the last matchup before World Cup qualifying begins on Oct. 15.

“This is great preparation for World Cup qualifying. I’m sure we’ll see Mexico in the qualifying tournament, so this is great for us to see what their strengths are, what their weaknesses are,” said Morgan. “But it’s good for us because we haven’t played too many games yet this year so it’s always good to get games under our belt with obviously a new formation and with Jill trying to make a couple adjustments in final preparations for the qualifying tournament.”
