On the evening of Jan. 6, the stars of TLC’s hit reality show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo were injured in a serious automobile accident in Milledgeville, Georgia. According to TMZ, Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson was driving 8-year-old Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, along with June “Mama June” Shannon, Lauryn “Pumpkin” Shannon and Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon.
Sources stated that Sugar Bear was at a red light, waiting for the traffic light to change, so he could make a left turn. When the light turned green, he attempted to make the turn. Then, the driver of a pick-up truck, who was identified as 19-year-old Seth Cagle, was allegedly speeding from the opposite direction with his lights off. The truck collided with the family’s Suburban.
According to the accident report, both drivers actually had the green light, but no arrow to turn. Sugar Bear stated he just didn’t see the trucking coming in his direction, due to its lights being off. However, the driver of the truck claims that the lights were on an automatic setting, reports E! News. Cagle even spoke exclusively with E! regarding the accident.
“We both had the green light. He [Sugar Bear] made a left hand turn which crossed the lane and I was traveling and that is when I struck him because he cut me off. He made a left hand turn when crossing on-coming traffic—that is when he struck me and I struck him. I was headed straight, ” he explained.
“There happened to be an ambulance around right when the accident happened, and one of the girls got checked out and they left,” Cagle added. “I don’t know which one it was. The paramedics left when the police got there and we all stayed until the police arrived and then told us we could go.”
The report went on to state that the family suffered minor injuries, and both vehicles had ‘moderate damage’. TMZ shared the details of the injuries from Pumpkin’s account. She said that Sugar Bear suffered a contusion on his back, and Mama June sprained her neck and back. Little Honey Boo Boo had a headache after hitting her head against one of the passenger windows. Pumpkin also stated that she sustained severe chest bruising and panic attacks as a result of the accident.
Mama June released a brief statement on behalf of her family in regards to the accident and their condition.
“As many of you have heard we were in a car accident last night,” said Mama June. “It was really scary for us, since it was the first time any of us had ever been in a wreck. We are definitely really sore today, but our top priority is to celebrate Pumpkin’s birthday. She turned 14 today and no matter how sore we feel we are going to go out and celebrate. As always we want to thank everyone for their support and well wishes.”
The third season of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo is scheduled to premiere Jan. 16, on TLC.
