Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is down with a stomach bug which has forced her to cancel a big trip to the Middle East and Morocco. Deputy Secretary Bill Burns will take her place at the Friends of the Syrian People meeting during a discussion about the Syrian opposition.
“Since she’s still under the weather, we’ll be staying put this week instead of heading to North Africa and the Middle East as originally planned. In her place, Deputy Secretary [Bill] Burns will travel to Marrakech for the Friends of the Syrian People meeting. We will let you know when she shakes this bug and resumes a public schedule,” spokesman Philippe Reines said in a statement.
The meeting was to focus on the future of the Syrian opposition and how to legitimize it.
Rumors have been flying recently about Clinton and her plans once her run as Secretary of State ends and a successor is named in her place; many believe she’ll run for president in 2016. A new Politico poll shows a wide and successful margin of favor for her name by voters–more than 60%–but she’s said this year that it’s not in the cards for her.
“Look, I’m flattered. I am honored,” she told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “That is not in the future for me, but obviously I’m hoping that I’ll get to cast my vote for a woman running for president of our country.”
