  • In the advent of former LA Lakers star Lamar Odom’s drug-fueled collapse, people have been talking about the “other drug” that is said to have contributed to Odom’s sudden health deterioration.

Nicknamed “herbal Viagra,” this drug is apparently sold in legal brothels across Nevada. According to Dennis Hof, owner of the now-infamous Love Ranch in Crystal, Nevada, this sex supplement can be purchased at truck stops and gasoline stations.

But ever since Odom’s terrifying brush with death, this “herbal Viagra” has gotten everyone’s attention. The burning questions that’s on everyone’s minds right now is: What is this drug? What does it really do besides increase one’s libido? How safe is it?

The Mayo Clinic, among many other medical websites, say that drugs that claim to be the “herbal” form of prescription medications can actually be dangerous as they aren’t subjected to the same quality standards as their prescription counterparts.

The real Viagra is a drug that treats erectile dysfunction works by relaxing the blood vessels of the penis in order to increase blood flow when a man is aroused. On the other hand, “herbal Viagra” and other cheaper alternatives do not have the ability to focus vasodilation to just the penis. Odom had taken at least 10 pills of “herbal Viagra” supplements called Reload and Libimax Plus, which he was reported to have consumed in the span of just three days. He was also said to have used cocaine and opiates prior to his stay at the Love Ranch.

“Herbal Viagra” actually kills thousands of users every year, but it’s probably Odom’s case that has compelled the government to take action. According to POLITICO New York, State Senator Jose Peralta has drafted a bill that would fine anyone who sells these types of supplements to the public.

“The state division of consumer protection will have the power to monitor this product. And additionally, the Department of Health will work with consumer protection to provide a database of dangerous supplements that are being marketed for increase sexual performance and erectile dysfunction,” Peralta said.
