When two Spanish hunting dog breeders discovered that their mother dog had given birth they were shocked. The litter consisted of two very tiny green puppies. Yes, you read that right … they were green!

“I couldn’t believe it when I first saw them,” Aida Vallelado Molina, one of the dog’s owners, said. “I thought the puppies were dirty and tried to clean them, but the color wouldn’t come off,” she added.

The puppies were born on June 3rd and had a strange green pigment. They were smaller and weaker than the other puppies in the litter, and the female died shortly after birth. Although the male is still weak, he is alive and is starting to lose his green color.

A local vet Daniel Valverde is currently investigating the odd color and the death of the female puppy. “There are no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature,” he told local newspaper Laguna al Día after researching the bizarre births at Madrid’s Complutense University. Daniel is currently completing virological and bacteriological tests to determine the cause of the pigmentation.

These puppies, who are currently being referred to as the “hulk puppies,” are not the first case of puppies being born with a green pigment. In October 2012, the Daily Mail ran an article about a green puppy being born in England. That puppy survived and lost his pigmentation ten days after birth.

Researchers determined that the previous green puppy was exposed to biliverdin, a green bile pigment found in the placenta, that caused his green tone.
