Earlier this week, Lou Dobbs brought the issue of a new Pew poll to the attention of a panel discussion on Fox Business. The poll found that women are now the “breadwinners” in 40% of U.S. households. The panel, which consisted entirely of male Fox News commentators, saw the study as evidence that America is crumbling and its social structure imploding.
On Thursday, Fox News host Greta Van Susteren took to her blog to lambast her colleagues, asking, “Have these men lost their minds?” She suggested that the men might next be commenting on the elimination of women’s right to vote.
Her criticism was short, as the men’s comments speak for themselves.
The first panel member to speak, Fox News Policical Analyst Juan Williams, said the study shows “the disintegration of marriage” and is a sign of “something going terribly wrong in American society.” Williams also put forth the opinion that the news is bad for children.
Fox News Contributor Erick Erickson next stated that the study contradicts his view of the natural world.
“When you look at biology, look at the natural world, the roles of a male and a female in society and other animals, the male typically is the dominant role,” said Eriickson. “The female is not antithesis or it’s not competing, it’s a complimentary role. We as people in a smart society have lost the ability to have complimentary relationships in nuclear families and it’s tearing us apart.”
Fox News Contributor Doug Schoen rounded out the panel by agreeing with Williams, calling the poll result a “catastrophic issue.”
“…Sadly, no one on the left, right, or center is dealing with the breakdown of family structure,” said Schoen. “We’re losing a generation. Bottom line: it could undermine our social order.”
