Gerard Butler stars in the new film Gods of Egypt, but that won’t necessarily be a positive mark on his list of acting credentials. The Lionsgate film reportedly bombed during its opening weekend, with estimated earnings of just $4.7 million.

Gods of Egypt stars Gerard Butler in the role of Set, the God of Darkness. According to the L.A. Times, it’s opening screen average of $1,527 was “less than god-like.”
Gods of Egypt attracted some early complaints–long before it’s release, however–because mostly white actors were cast in the roles of Egyptians. Reviews thus far have been less than complimentary.
It just goes to show that even when casting a pretty face in the leading role, the film itself has to pull its own weight. Gerard Butler is dashing, but fans would likely much rather see him in a romantic comedy or a James Bond-type film.
Running around in some sort of armor isn’t befitting the handsome actor.

Alas Gerard Butler and Gods of Egypt didn’t sink to the bottom of this weekend’s box office barrel. Eddie the Eagle and Kung Fu Panda 3, as well as the Lenten release Risen, all earned significantly less.
