Emilia Clarke spoke recently about her feelings on television sex scenes, saying they are far too gratuitous for her taste.

Clarke, who plays Daenerys on the hit HBO show Game Of Thrones, says that her British upbringing won’t allow her to not cringe when she sees a nude scene on television.

“Sex scenes should be more subtle. I’m British, so I cringe at that sort of thing anyway — I can’t stand it. Most sex scenes you see in films or on TV are gratuitous and they’re usually just to attract an audience. On screen, the subtler the better,” Clarke told the Daily Mail.

Interestingly, Game Of Thrones has become one of the hottest shows on television when it comes to sex scenes, and Clarke herself has disrobed several times onscreen. However, rumor has it that she has rebelled against the nude scenes in recent years, reportedly not wanting to become known for her body more than her acting.

“One of the girls in the show who got her kit off the most in the first couple of seasons now doesn’t at all because she said, ‘I want to be known for my acting not for my breasts’,” Clarke’s co-star Oona Chaplin told the Telegraph.

Most of Emilia Clarke’s co-stars say they don’t mind the nudity and lascivious scenes because they are not only integral to much of the drama, they are done well. Natalie Dormer, who plays Margaery Tyrell, says that the showrunners know what they’re doing when it comes to sex and violence.

“I think Thrones is quite good. The violence is quite naturalistic. It’s not hyper-stylised. It’s not glamorous. The sex is quite real and dirty as well. It’s about those raw, visceral qualities of human life that make good drama,” Dormer said.
