Today, Google is honoring famed Hollywood Costume designer Edith Head, whose illustrious career included 8 Academy Award wins and 35 nominations. Head won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for the films The Heiress, Samson and Delilah, All About Eve, A Place in the Sun, Roman Holiday, Sabrina, The Facts of Life, and The Sting.
Head’s career began in 1924, when she was hired on at Paramount Pictures as a costume sketch artist. She started designing costumes for silent films in the mid ’20s and was in high demand by the mid ’30s. She continued working at Paramount for 43 years, later moving to Universal Pictures where she would finish out her career.
Although Head technically worked for Paramount for most of her career, some of Hollywood’s leading ladies liked her work so much that Head would be “loaded” to other studios at the actresses’ request.
Who were some of those actresses you ask? Head designed costumes for the likes of Mae West, Barbara Stanwyck, Ginger Rogers, Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, Sophia Loren, Katharine Hepburn, Natalie Wood, and many, many more.
Head was Edith Claire Posener on October 28th, 1897. Today’s Google Doodle is celebrating the 116th anniversary of that day.
Edith Head died in 1981 from myelofibrosis.
