Ebola, a deadly virus which is highly contagious and is spread through physical contact with body fluids, has shown up in Uganda. What’s scaring doctors is that victims aren’t exhibiting all the usual symptoms, so the disease wasn’t initially detected for what it was.
Normally, Ebola patients suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, red eyes, rashes, and bleeding from orifices, among other things. But only some of those symptoms was prevalent among those who first became sick. The CDC has sent several workers to Uganda to try and determine just how far the disease has reached and is urging everyone at risk to avoid coming into contact with bedding or clothing from any of the patients. For now, however, panic continues to spread in the area.
“The Ministry of Health are tracing all the people who have had contact with the victims,” President Yoweri Museveni said in a statement.
Yoweri warned against shaking hands until the virus is contained, as well as unprotected sex, since the disease is spread through bodily fluids. While officials are working on figuring out what may have started the outbreak, they’ve surmised that it may have come from a monkey or group of monkeys who reside in the Kibale forest, which is close to where the first victims popped up.
Several people who are suspected of harboring the disease have been isolated at Kigadi Hospital, including a woman who helped bury other victims. She is currently in stable condition.
