Doritos commercials have been making us laugh for several Super Bowls now, and for the past seven years the ads have been a little different, as they were created for a contest sponsored by Doritos. On Sunday, the top two finalists in this year’s contest saw their commercials aired during the game and the winner was announced on Monday.
Raj Suri of Arizona, who created the “Time Machine” commercial, was announced as the $1 million winner along with his director, Ryan Andersen. The little boy in the ad is Andersen’s son, and the idea struck a chord with football fans during the big game. After the votes were tallied, “Time Machine” came out the victor over “Cowboy Kid” by Amber Gill and Ladera Ranch. The runners-up will receive $50,000, however, and will be working along with Suri and Andersen on the set of “The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” as part of their winnings.
“There has been tremendous enthusiasm around the world for all five of our finalists and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how consumers have rallied behind their favorites during the voting process,” said Ram Krishnan, vice president of marketing for PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay division. “While fan votes picked one winner, the Doritos brand had a tough time picking our second winner, so we ultimately decided to go with the ad that generated the second highest votes. We’re extremely proud of our two winners and look forward to revealing who will win the $1 million grand prize.”
Over 5,400 ads were entered in the contest, but only five were chosen as winners; the remaining three contestants each won $25,000 and you can view those here.
