Whovians needn’t wait any longer to find out who Matt Smith’s Doctor will regenerate into – Peter Capaldi will be the new Time Lord traveling in the TARDIS.

During a special on Sunday, the world watched as Capaldi was presented as the new Doctor.

“Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it’s been so fantastic,” said Capaldi.

The newly minted twelfth Doctor said he found out about his new job while filming in Prague. After seeing a missed call from his agent, he called back and his agent answered, “Hello Doctor.”

Capaldi is best known for playing the role of Malcom Tucker in the BBC sitcom The Thick of It from 2005 to 2012. Tucker was a political spin doctor known for dropping f-bombs. He won a BAFTA Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Role and two British Comedy Awards for the role.

Twitter was bombarded with tweets about the anticipation and the announcement of the new doctor.

The official Doctor Who twitter account has already released a video of Capaldi introducing himself as the new Doctor.

A videotaped message of Smith to Capaldi ended the special, “I just want to wish my successor all the best and say good luck and good on you for getting it. I know he’s a huge fan of the show and a really nice guy. The casting of it made me really excited it. I think it’s a really canny choice. Good luck, man. It’s going to be a thrill.”

Fans now have a 50th anniversary special in November to look forward to, as well as Smith’s last episode in the Christmas special. New episodes of Doctor Who will air in August.
