  • Screen legend Debbie Reynolds received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards that was held on Sunday night. This is a major honor for Reynolds, who has several nominations under her belt including a couple of Golden Globe nominations, as well as Tony and Oscar nominations. However, despite all these nominations, she has never won a major award… until now, that is. The SAG Lifetime Achievement Award is given to artists to recognize their career achievements and humanitarian efforts.

The award was presented to Debbie Reynolds by her daughter, Carrie Fisher. In an interview with the LA Times prior to the awards show, Reynolds said, “I asked her if she would be in town because she was doing Star Wars. She said yes, she will!” Fisher, who is also known for her dry sense of humor, delivered a funny but also touching tribute to her mother.

“Not only was my grandmother her mother, she is the grandmother to my alleged daughter. It also turns out that we’re neighbors,” Fisher said. “And if all this weren’t enough, she’s also my mother. She’s been more than a mother to me — not much — but definitely more.” The Star Wars actress elicited laughs for her comments.

Debbie Reynolds, now 82, began her career when she was signed by Warner Brothers immediately after being crowned Miss Burbank at the age of 16. “I’m very proud to say I was Miss Burbank and had a hole in my bathing suit and my rear end was hanging out and I didn’t have shoes, high heel shoes,” she said in an interview in 2013. “I’m very grateful for stumbling into show business.”

Reynolds’ first film was the musical The Daughter of Rosie Grady back in 1950. Her most iconic role however, was starring beside Gene Kelly in the classic film Singin’ In The Rain.
