Actress Christine Baranski, known for her roles in television, musicals, and film, has lost her husband of 30 years, actor Matthew Cowles.
Baranski is most recently known for her role of Diane Lockhart on The Good Wife, was also in Cybill, and is known for guest starring on The Big Bang Theory as Leonard’s mother, Beverly Hofstadter.
Her husband, Matthew Cowles, was best known for his role as the villain Billy Clyde Tuggle on the ABC soap opera All My Children. Cowles invented and wrote that role. He played Tuggle in the late 70s, then again in the late 80s, and returned to the role briefly in 2013.
Cowles was also a playwright. He had most recently appeared on the big screen in a supporting role in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
Cowles and Baranski married in 1983, had two children together, and were inseparable.
The cause of Cowles death is so far unknown and unpublished. He was 69 when he died.
His manager Tsu Tsu Stanton said of Cowles, “He was a very gifted and kind man who loved life and everyone.”
Cowles wife, Christine Baranski, is a much better-known figure nowadays, not just because of her role in The Good Wife, as well as Big Bang Theory appearances, but for her work on stage. She began her career in Off-Broadway productions, and made her Boradway debut in 1980,
She has won Tony and Drama Desk awards twice. Folks will recall Baranski in the film Chicago, which crosses over between the worlds of stage musicals and film. The film starred Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Richard Gere. Baranski played the role of Mary Sunshine, a reporter whose retelling of events in the film is at the heart of the films moral, that the public can be played, razzle-dazzled, into turning a blind eye to even criminal behavior if a celebrity spin is put on it by a skillful spin-master.
