After upsetting the long undefeated Liverpool FC over the weekend, many British media publications lined up to declare Jose Mourinho a genius and hail the Chelsea FC tactics at Anfield as the “death of possessive football”.
Wise observers have always known that possessing the ball means nothing if you do nothing with it going forward.
Despite this, it seemed to some that Chelsea’s set up against Liverpool would also be applied to Atlético Madrid, who would then crumble and go away defeated.
But Atlético Madrid is not Liverpool and the Champions League is not the Barclays Premier League.
You have to play for the CL title if you want to win it.
Atlético Madrid came to London to do just that, and they walked out 1-3 victors over a rattled Chelsea team.
After a little over a half hour of play, neutrals and fans alike were expecting the game to drift toward a scoreless conclusion. There were many that were entertaining the possibility of a penalty shootout.
Then Fernando Torres of all people opened up the scoring in the 36th minute, leading Chelsea fans to chant that “he scores when he wants” (which isn’t often enough, sadly).
For a few minutes Chelsea was on top of the world and dreaming of a trip to Lisbon for the final game.

Adrián equalized in the 44th minute, bringing the Blues crashing back down to Earth.
The half ended shortly afterward, but the London club had no way of knowing the 1-1 score was pretty much the beginning of the end.

Atlético was awarded a penalty in the 58th minute of the game after Diego Costa was tripped in front of goal. A couple of minutes later, Costa netted home a sublime goal that put Atlético in the driver seat. With 2 away goals, the odds were already in their favor.
A third goal by Arda Turan in the 72nd minute proved to be the nail in the coffin.
Chelsea will miss out on the Champions League final and Jose Mourinho will yet again be denied the Champions League trophy.
After a brilliant weekend display by “the B team”, it was the rested squad that failed to deliver the goods.
As for Atlético Madrid, they are set to face local rivals Real Madrid in what is destined to be an amazing final game.
See you soon!
