“Charlize got injured on a set and broke a vertebrae years ago,” an source told Us. “It’s been bothering her a lot lately so she had surgery to correct it and they had to go through her neck.”

Theron could be seen at the Variety’s 5th Annual Power Of Women event at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons Hotel on Friday. She was wearing a cream Stella McCartney dress that had a neck line high enough to cover the bandage and small incision on her neck.

“She’s got a small Band-Aid on her neck,” another source said. “She kept fussing with the white scarf. She was wearing to cover it, but it was poking out and visible.”

Theron was being honored at the event for her work to end HIV/AIDS. She gave an emotional speech and said that she wanted to give the award to her mother who also worked for the cause.

“It’s impossible for me to accept this award because there’s someone here so much more powerful than me,” Theron said. “I hope you’re OK with me giving this award to my mom,” she continued. “That bitch was building roads in Africa when no woman was doing that. I thank you, Mom, for teaching me to by your actions how to be a strong woman, and for turning me into a p—y every time I talk to you.”

Theron was honored along with Amy Poehler, Nicole Kidman, Elizabeth Banks, Jennifer Hudson, and Kerry Washington.
