Charlize Theron and Sean Penn have split up.

It comes as a surprise as everything has seemed to be just perfect since they were first linked together in 2013.

Since then, they were nearly inseparable and announced in December that they planned to marry.

According to People magazine, Charlize Theron spent less and less time together in recent weeks. In fact, in recent weeks, they began to live under separate roofs.

Charlize Theron and son Jackson, three, remained at their Hollywood home and Penn moved back in to his Malibu mansion, which he had put up for sale but recently pulled off the market.

The couple were last seen together on the Cannes red carpet in May.

The news comes as a surprise to many.

Just last month Theron gushed about Penn to British Elle, calling Penn the “love of my life.”

“Putting aside that he’s my partner, he’s the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life, and that made it hard,” Charlize Theron told the magazine.

While in France, Charlize Theron, 39, and Sean Penn, 54, enjoyed some down time with Jackson on the French Riviera when Charlize was not promoting her film Mad Max.

On Tuesday, Sean Penn was spotted solo in Brentwood purchasing magazines and cigarettes from a local newsstand.

According to Us Weekly, Theron initiated the breakup. Reps for the stars have not commented on the split.
