  • The numbers are in for the top-grossing box office hit during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has remained in the number one spot for U.S. and Canadian box offices, earning $110.2 million for the second weekend, surpassing Disney’s Frozen, which grossed $93 million.

Gitesh Pandya, who is the editor for Boxofficeguru.com, spoke about the film’s success during a telephone interview. ā€œCatching Fire is doing well beyond my expectations. Iā€™m projecting that this film will end up with more than $400 million just in North America. It should finish about the same level than the first movie and it should do much better at the international level,ā€ Pandya said.

According to Rentrak, Catching Fire has grossed a combined $573 million through international and domestic box office sales. In comparison, the first installment of the franchise, which was released in 2012, grossed $408 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, and $283.2 million from international box office sales.

The Top Five Movies For the Thanksgiving Weekend (Ending on December 1st) Are As Follows:
    1. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire ā€“ $110.1 million
    2. Frozen ā€“ $93.0 million
    3. Thor: The Dark World ā€“ $15.5 million
    4. The Best Man Holiday ā€“ $11.1 million
    5. Homefront ā€“ $9.8 million

According to Paul Dergarabedian, who is the senior media analyst for Rentrak, this Thanksgiving weekend was unique for box office sales and exceeded expectations. “All of these records being broken, it’s like a true snowball effect. Overall, this is the biggest Thanksgiving weekend for the industry ever. Last year was the Thanksgiving record holder, but this one-two punch with Catching Fire and Frozen was just amazing,” Dergarabedian said.
