  • Carrie Underwood, American Idol winner and country music darling, has come out in support of gay marriage. She unveiled her sure-to-be controversial stance during a recent interview with the Independent. When asked if she thought this decision would ultimately tarnish her reputation with her legion of fans and supporters, Underwood stated simply that she thought everyone had the right to love and marry who they wished.

“As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love and want to marry,” the singer explained. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

Although her opinions on the matter are sure to cause a firestorm of controversy amongst conservatives and country music fans alike, Underwood’s stance has drawn support from GOProud, an organization that claims to represent “gay conservatives and their straight allies.”

Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founder and executive of the organization, stated that “the more Americans think about how issues affect their gay friends and family the more they come to realize that supporting same-sex civil marriage is the right thing to do. More and more people are coming to that conclusion — and that includes conservative Christians.”

Underwood’s latest album, “Blown Away”, is currently resting at the top of the Billboard charts. She’s currently scheduled to play London’s Royal Albert Hall later this month.

How do Twitter users feel about the superstar’s decision to come out in support of gay marriage? The results are a decidedly mixed bag. Although Clay Aiken, who came out in 2008, is clearly on her side, there are plenty of individuals who are disappointed. Check them out below.
