Carol Doda, the San Francisco woman who helped popularize topless dancing, has died.

The cause of death is reported as kidney failure. She was 78.

Doda surely wasn’t the first stripper to take her top off, but she played a big role in popularizing the form of entertainment. In the mid 60s, Doda first began dancing topless at San Francisco’s Condor Club. This started a trend.

Doda was active for two decades, famous for her “twin 44s” – her silicone-enhanced breasts.

“She was much more than just dancing,” good friend Dick Winn told the San Francisco Chronicle. “She was one of the fastest comedians I ever knew for coming back with wisecracks. She was a wonderfully caring person who listened to you and gave good advice.”

Doda retired from stripping in the mid 1980s and opened up a lingerie shop in San Francisco. For the past few yeara, Doda had been performing at a supper club in the city. That gig was fully clothed.
