Police are investigating a horrific car accident that killed all seven people involved, including three children; the crash was the second to occur in the same area of the Bronx River Parkway.
45-year old Maria Gonzalez was driving her family to a party on Sunday–including her parents, sister, daughter, and two nieces–when she lost control of the vehicle and crossed the median and several lanes of traffic before becoming airborne and dropping more than fifty feet into a ravine which lies on the property of the zoo. All of the victims were wearing seat belts.
“Sometimes you come upon events that are horrific and this is one of them,” FDNY deputy Chief Ronald Werner said of the crash.
The height of the guardrail in that area will be investigated as a possible danger, officials say, as this is not the first time a car has gone off the road in that section of the Parkway.
The tragic circumstances surrounding this particular accident have taken a toll on residents in the area; three generations of a family lost their lives just a few miles from home, leaving a father to grieve on his own.
“I lost my family — what can I say? I don’t want to be here. I want to die,’’ said Juan Gonzalez, 45. His wife Maria was driving the vehicle, and their 10-year old daughter Jocelyn was in the backseat.
