Boko Haram, the terrorist group behind the abduction of 276 Nigerian girls in April, has reportedly conducted another kidnapping of 8 girls.
The group–whose name translates to “western education is sinful” or “western education is forbidden”–conducted the first abduction on a night when the Chibok schoolgirls were gathered to take an exam. On Monday, a man who says he is the group’s leader, Abubkar Shekau, released a video in which he announced he will sell the girls; their goal is to end their education and marry off every female.
“I abducted your girls. I will sell them in the market, by Allah. There is a market for selling humans. Allah says I should sell. He commands me to sell. I will sell women. I sell women,” he said.
The government’s inability to find and secure the girls to safety has brought outrage all over the world, although President Goodluck Jonathan’s spokespeople say they will continue rescue efforts.
“It is disheartening that someone would make such a terrible boast,” spokesman Doyin Okupe said. “It is to be expected of terrorists. No group can affect our resolve. We will see this through to the end. We have the commitment and capacity to get this done. No matter what this takes, we will get these girls.”

On Monday, the group kidnapped eight more girls from a village after raiding it with guns drawn; the abducted range in age from 12-15.
“Many people tried to run behind the mountain but when they heard gunshots, they came back,” one witness said. “The Boko Haram men were entering houses, ordering people out of their houses.”
Fear has kept the girls’ families from speaking out on their behalf, should any negative attention bring harm to their children. However, their lack of cooperation with police is hindering the investigation, officials say.
“What we request is maximum cooperation from the guardians and the parents of these girls. Because up to this time, they have not been able to come clearly, to give the police clear identity of the girls that have yet to return,” President Jonathan said.
