Bindi Irwin may be pretty and oh, so sweet, but that’s where the girly girl part of the 17-year-old ends. The daughter of Terri Irwin and the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin, Bindi has grown up as a conservationist. She said shortly after signing on to DWTS that she’s less scared of crocodiles than of competing for the mirror ball trophy.
This past week has been one of firsts for Bindi Irwin. She has rehearsed for Dancing With the Stars and she has worn her first pair–ever–of high heels.
“They said, ‘We’re going to put you in these heels,’ and I don’t think they realized that I had never worn heels before so I stood up and instantly fell down,” Irwin said during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Thursday. “Yeah, it was a good start to a great adventure.”

Bindi is paired with pro dancer Derek Hough for season 21 of Dancing With the Stars. She calls her partner “the greatest teacher on planet Earth.”
“I walked into this whole new adventure having no concept what I was going to do–I had the passion in my soul, but you really don’t know what to expect,” she said. “Derek was so good at putting my mind at ease and we’ve been taking it one piece at a time.”
Bindi Irwin addressed her fears–and those crocodiles–during an episode of Good Morning America recently.

“I am used to wrangling crocodiles,” she said. “It’s all about having the courage and strength, and for me, it is something completely different but I hope that I am able to inspire others in their own lives to seize opportunity and to make a difference and just jump, take that leap, even if it terrifies you.”
Bindi Irwin and Derek Hough will call their dance team ‘Team Crikey.’
Dancing With the Stars premieres its 21st season on ABC on September 14.
