On what would have been the star’s 85th birthday, Google unveiled its latest logo—a tribute to actress Audrey Hepburn, in pink, black, and white colors, that calls to mind not only her timeless beauty but her humanitarian efforts around the world.
Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful women in the world, Hepburn starred in numerous films from War and Peace to Roman Holiday, the latter of which won her an Oscar, BAFTA Award, and Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of Princess Ann.
According to IB Times, Hepburn’s most well-known role was occurred in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, although Truman Capote wanted to cast Marilyn Monroe first for the role. Hepburn later called the role, “the jazziest of my career.”
But the Google logo calls to mind not just her beauty and film career but her humanitarian efforts as well. From 1988 to 1992, she devoted much of her time to UNICEF, where she worked in disadvantaged communities around the globe, spending much time in Africa, Asia, and South America.
She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in December 1992. A month later, she died of a rare form of appendiceal cancer in her home in Switzerland.
After her death, her partner Robert Wolders and her son Sean Ferrer founded the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund to continue Hepburn’s humanitarian efforts.
Wolders says on the website, “Audrey never, it seems to me, strove or hoped to leave a lasting legacy with her films. Certainly she was tickled by the fact that so many of them had become as popular as they did.
“What I feel she would have wanted, had she been given more time, would have been to continue her efforts on behalf of children – because she knew it is a never-ending task with much still to be accomplished. If there is anything she would have wished for it is that her work be continued.”
