Amy Poehler always has something smart to say–she is, after all, one of the co-founders of Smart Girls–and recently she spoke about the way we define others, saying we should all try to see others in ways that have nothing to do with their physical appearance.
The comedian and mother of two says she did an experiment once where she challenged herself to do just that, and the results were interesting.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing if you spent one day not mentioning how anybody looks, or how you look? I think I tried it as an exercise one time. I was saying, ‘Oh, she’s that really funny person.’ Or, ‘He’s that guy who has that great science mind,’ so you don’t say, like, ‘He’s the tall one’; ‘She’s whatever.’ And then, if you look in the mirror, you don’t say, ‘How do I look?’ It’s almost impossible,” Poehler told Glamour.
Amy and her best friend, Tina Fey, tackle a lot of stereotypes in their comedy but still make time to be silly together, something Poehler was known for on Saturday Night Live. The two women have known each other for over two decades, which Amy says makes things a lot easier when they work on a movie together.
“There’s usually this moment at the beginning of a film when you have to go out for dinner and talk to an unfamiliar co-star and be like, ‘How do you like to work?’ We didn’t have to do any of that when we first started Sisters…The older you get, the more you treasure that idea of someone knowing your family and where you came from, and being around during these times and these times,” Amy said.
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will team up once more to host Saturday Night Live later this month, much to their fans’ excitement.
