Last month, when the Disney Channel aired an episode of “Good Luck Charlie” featuring a same-sex couple, One Million Moms started a petition urging parents to email one of the show’s sponsors and ask them to pull their ads from the show. Now, the mother of the 5-year old actress who plays Charlie has come forward with Instagram comments aimed at the little girl, urging her to “kill herself”.
Mia Talerico’s mother says she discovered the threats and immediately got the police involved; an investigation is ongoing. One message reads, “Die Mia, F**king Die in hell! Kill yourself, you deserve to die”. Another shows a photo of Mia with a bloody fist covering her head and is captioned with another threat.
Whether the threats were made in connection to the show’s decision to include a same-sex couple in a recent episode is unclear, but authorities say they are taking the situation very seriously. The Disney Channel has not released a statement as yet.
Disney announced their plans to bring on the couple–two moms of a little girl who comes over for a playdate with Charlie–back in June, and though there were mixed reactions, many thought the episode was a ground-breaking step for the kids’ channel. One Million Moms, however, took issue with the episode even though the show is in its last season and announced their campaign to pull advertising.
“An upcoming episode in this last season of “Good Luck Charlie” will feature a family with two moms, a first for Disney Channel. Because “Good Luck Charlie” is coming to a close, the characters are only expected to appear in one episode. However, one episode is enough, especially since the network repeatedly airs reruns of all its programs,” the statement on the site reads. “One Million Moms launched an email campaign in 2013 that urged Disney officials to abandon their plans to corrupt the children’s network with LGBT content. However, Disney officials have not responded to the thousands of emails protesting their plans. Disney has decided to be politically correct instead of providing family-friendly programming. Disney should stick to entertaining, not pushing an agenda. Conservative families need to urge Disney to avoid controversial topics that children are far too young to comprehend. This is the last place a parent would expect their children to be confronted with topics that are too difficult for them to understand. Mature issues of this nature are being introduced too early and too soon, and it is extremely unnecessary.”
