Syfy adds a new series to their scripted programming schedule, and things get crazy with this new futuristic epic.

Today, April 5, Syfy officially picked up 12 Monkeys for a 13-episode run, including the pilot, to premiere in January 2015. The series is based on the 1995 movie of the same name starring Bruce Willis, Jon Seda, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt.

In Twelve Monkeys, Willis plays a criminal named James Cole in a post-apocalyptic, futurist world. In it, Earth’s citizens live underground to escape a deadly virus. Cole uses the science of time travel to collect data on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.

Terry Gilliam’s version of Twelve Monkeys was based on Chris Markers' 1968 short film La Jetee.

In the series adaptation of 12 Monkeys, Aaron Stanford takes over the role of James Cole. He appears in the present day on a mission to find and stop the source of the deadly virus that destroyed the human race.

In the official press release for 12 Monkeys, SyFy’s president Dave Howe said this about the series.

12 Monkeys is a captivating time-travel adventure and high-stakes race against the clock. We are thrilled to add it to our slate of engaging and thought-provoking new scripted projects including the recently announced event series Ascension and the second season renewal of Helix from Ron Moore.”

The Hollywood Reporter first reported about plans to film the pilot episode in July 2013. At the time, the SyFy network hoped to add five or six scripted programs to join Helix, which just announced a second season run.

12 Monkeys joins Syfy’s other original scripted series Continuum, Lost Girl, Haven, Defiance. The network says farewell to its other scripted series Warehouse 13 and Being Human this year.

The 12 Monkeys series also stars Amanda Schull (Suits), Zeljko Ivanek (Revolution), Kirk Acevedo (Fringe), Noah Bean (Nikita), and Shannon Lucio (Prison Break).
