Willie Nelson has been a country music icon for many years, his red braids and bandanna instantly recognizable to anyone with even a little knowledge of the genre. Countless musicians have been influenced by his slow, gentle style, and today marks the unveiling of a monument built in his honor in Austin, Texas.

The 8-foot statue of Nelson has been erected by the Moody Theater, and the artist, Clete Shields, says he wanted to give the musician a “timeless, ageless” look. The monument is intended to be a tribute to the man who has contributed so much to Austin and to the world of country music, as well as film; his songs have appeared in numerous movies, including “Shrek” and “Zombieland”. Nelson himself has made appearances on television and on the silver screen; one of his most famous cameos is from the Dave Chappelle cult classic “Half Baked”.

Nelson is famously pro-marijuana–having been arrested for possession of the drug several times–so the decision to hold the monument unveiling on a day which is nationally recognized as “weed day”, or a day to recognize those who support it’s legalization, seems rather cheeky. But the organizers insist it’s just a coincidence.

Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. I drew up a very cool poster featuring Uncle Willie Nelson and The Teapot Party for the cause which you can check out on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/01/vote-teapot-2011.html Drop in and let me know what you think!

I think that is just so awesome to have a huge statue of Willie Nelson! He’s one of my favorite country singers. He deserves it too. I remember a few weekends ago, i went w/ my friend to eat w/ family at this steak place. I cant exactly remember the name of the place, but it had Willie nelson’s picture as a drawing of him in braids and a bandanna kickin his heels w/ a guitar, and a big smile on his face! Once i saw this, i knew exactly who it was. I also have seen him perform, and almost got to meet him, but it was too crowded and when i got where he was, he was gone. It was still cool to see him though. He is just so wonderful, and i love him <3. Go Willie!!! đŸ˜€

There has never ever been a person more deserving of such an honor as the one and only willie Nelson.I am 53 and have sort of grown up, as many others have ,with this redheaded stranger. His days of constant sarrow with theI.R.S. and his triumphent return over their opprsion is insperational. As well it is sooo good to be able to high five this guy while he is still with us,unlike Johnny and June, and Waylon.I am sure the memories of those gone now are forever on willies mind and in his heart. To Willie himself, from me, its about time buddy.Lighting it up for ever.LOLOLOL, this ones for you and your good fortune.

Willie Nelson is a great artist. It’s great that someone would design and place a nice monument of him while he’s still on this earth.

(Shameless Plug) Speaking of pot, I think anyone who likes the interview would probably like my web site – http://www.grow-sun.com.
