As you might have seen while perusing the internets this afternoon, Former Warrant frtonman Jani Lane was found dead last night in a motel room just outside of L.A. When we first told you about his death, we reported on the Twitter reaction from his fellow musicians and other celebrities.

At that time, the cause of death was unknown. As of right now it is still undetermined, but police might have a few more clues.

According to TMZ, investigators have uncovered a “half-empty” bottle of vodka and prescription pills in the hotel room where they found the body.

Apparently, paramedics arrived around 5:15 pm yesterday and pronounced Lane dead at the scene. An autopsy will be held later today but the death is currently being treated as either an accidental overdose or a death by natural causes.

The news of Lane’s death has not only been discussed by celebs – the general population is pretty enthralled with it. He’s been trending all day on Twitter and so has one of Warrant’s most famous songs, “Cherry Pie.”

Not cool at all… RIP Jani Lane. For you I will eat a cherry pie. 3 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

First Hightower and now the Cherry Pie guy: all of my adolescent role models are dying. 8 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

But some are fighting back, saying that remembering Lane as the “Cherry Pie guy” is wrong.

Remembering Jani Lane for Warrant’s “Cherry Pie” instead of “Heaven” is like if Bret Michaels died and everyone thought: “Unskinny Bop.” 56 minutes ago via web · powered by @socialditto

RIP Warrant vocalist Jani Lane. Aside from “Cherry Pie” you were responsible 4 arguably the greatest hair metal ballad ever ..”Heaven” 11 hours ago via Twitterrific · powered by @socialditto

Another thing on Jani Lane’s death –

I was tipped off to this via Twitter, and it prompted a big “C’mon, guys!” YouTube, you might want to do something about this ad that pops up before the official Cherry Pie video. Seems a bit insensitive, don’t you think?

What do you guys think? For which song should we remember Jani Lane? Let us know in the comments.

    Heaven, naturally.

Every song on the Cherry Pie album is better than Heaven. With all due respect to Heaven.

In all fairness, most songs on DRFSR were better as well.

jani wrote so many songs… many never made it to disc, so its naturally hard to say which one to remember him by. i personally like a lot of what he wrote. great front him, and funny as hell in concert, but better at writing songs i think… but all in all, he loved family and friends im sure, so down boys might be cool. he would probably want to rock out “of this world” to a song like that vs heaven. why would you wanna sing about it, if your on your way now??? no pun intended… lol

Down Boys is a good jam. Hard to top Uncle Tom’s Cabin though.

Warrant was my fav band since I was 13. Jani Lane was my biggest childhood crush…I still loved warrant when I went to see them in LA when I was 23 and stood front row center at the whisky. I talked to him on pirate radio when I was about 14 and told him to “wait for me” lol..just so happens that my favorite song for the past 20 years has alwas been heaven and anyone that trul knows me will play it at my funeral for me. Heaven is the best song…ever. definately warrants best, but after that the songs I still have on my mp3 player are I saw Red and Uncle Toms Cabin. Sometimes she cries is good too. Cherry pie is at th bottom of my list because its not as much from his heart as you can hear in his other songs. Don’t forget their breakout song Down Boys. Ill have to dig out my tshirt…and say my goodbyes. Sigh…this one hurts more than any I can remember for me personally.

I think that when someone writes as many songs as he has over the years, it gets hard to narrow it down for a favorite. Realistically…he wrote some great rock anthems in Cherry Pie, Down Boys, Big Talk, and Uncle Tom’s Cabin…but later songs like Stronger Now, and Bitter Pill, or Andy Warhol Was Right are much more heartfelt and probably more representative of him throwing his heart and soul into a song. Personally…Stronger Now has gotten me through some tough times in my life, by reminding me that there is life after love. So for me…that’s the one people should remember him for.

Now there’s a serious Warrant fan. Much respect.

Never thought I’d start crying over “The Cherry Pie” dude, but after hearing about this unfortunate event earlier today, I did this afternoon (in private of course!). I’m 43 and saw Warrant a few times live and they were very enertaining. I remember when he got really fat & went on on “the biggest loser” and loved his desire to change. I still am not over Ronnie James Dio (TOP 3 OF ALL TIME FOR ME!), so this is yet another chapter in my own long story. California will kill ‘ya & he will be missed..

    heaven

Agreed with Jim. Also love High and Chameleon off of Ultraphobic. Dog Eat Dog was so under rated…his father was a writer and teacher. I read an interview once where he said that his dad died around the time Cherry Pie broke and he didn’t want his dada to remember that as his legacy. He really wanted Uncle Tom’s Cabin to be the album title to show he could write with more depth. Nothing Warrant did before or after Cherry Pie was as as cartoonish. In fact, Mr Rainmaker off that cd is a pretty great track and not as adolescent boyish.
They were my first favorite band. He was Warrant. He was the primary writer of both the music and the lyrics for the band. For me, it’s the official end of an era. I hope he’s at peace and I hope his wife and daughters find comfort. ( we will miss you John Oswald… You touched a lot o people.)

I think “Heaven” probably is the song most of Warrant’s fans love. I think he would have wanted us to remember “Stronger Now” and “Song And Dance Man.”

    Jani hated “Cheery Pie”.

People seek after fame and wealth and many other things to fill a void within themselves. But the desire is to filled the self with more empty worthlessness .Jesus God came in the flesh to offer us all a option and hope that is forever true.We are all sinners in search of a way to feel worthwhile.Since we all done the crimes of sins against God .Jesus being God offer Love from himself to take on our crimes of sins and even our punishment on himself.Jesus being did this and over came death .Now all of us have the option to ask Jesus to forgive our sin and He is just to forgive us.We in ourselves cannot do anything to gain Forgiveness and heaven.Good works cannot gain us heaven. If they could gain us heaven then you could boast about it.But only Jesus can pardon you from sentence of hell and give you heaven.
