Firefox 3 Slated For June 17 Release

Browser to try for world download record

The Mozilla Foundation will shoot for a world record when they make their latest browser, Firefox 3, available for download.

Though Mozilla recently posted a third release candidate of Firefox 3, little time elapsed between placing it in the hands of testers and declaring the full version of the browser ready to hit the Internet. The anticipated release of Firefox 3 will happen next Tuesday.

"After more than 34 months of active development, and with the contributions of thousands, we’re proud to announce that we’re ready," Mike Beltzner said at Mozilla Developer Center.

He also remarked on the release candidate version of Firefox 3, noting this third update contained only a single change affecting users on the Mac OS X platform. Mozilla listed the salient changes from Firefox 2 to 3 among its over 15,000 improvements, which included speed, memory usage, and reliability tweaks in the forthcoming release.

Once it's available, Mozilla hopes to set a world record with the most downloads in 24 hours when June 17 arrives. Currently, over a million people have pledged to grab a copy of Firefox 3 on the 17th.
