New Google Home Page: Does it Remove or Add Distraction?
· 18

Google has launched its new homepage, which looks generally the same, but removes everything but the logo, search box, and two buttons until the user moves the mouse. Google says most people go to the Google home page to search, and they wanted to remove the other distractions, unless users specifically want to see them.

New AOL (or is it Aol.?) Logo Revealed
· 4

AOL has shown off a new logo, which it considers a significant part of its new "brand identity." That is of course to go with its newfound independence from Time Warner. The logo is simple. Aol. That’s it – capital A, lower-case o, lower case l, and a period.

Over the past few months we’ve been hard at work redesigning our brand channel layout and many partners and advertisers have already opted into, and taken advantage of, this new design. Today we’re beginning the process of converting all remaining partner and advertiser channels still using the older platform to the new one.

In case you haven’t noticed by now, Google has gotten bigger. The homepage and search results pages now have a bigger searchbox, complete with a bigger font when you type in a query.

More Things to Look For From New YouTube Channels
· 1

The full launch of YouTube’s new channels is getting to be long overdue, but the date is still unknown at this point. As YouTube keeps saying however, they’re getting closer.

Meanwhile, the channels have been available to those who have tried hard enough to gain access to them, and YouTube continues to make improvements to them. One such improvement just made, is the ability to reorder your uploads, favorites, and lists of playlists.

Facebook Makes Subtle Changes to Design

Facebook has quietly made a few changes to its design. It’s not exactly a huge overhaul that will provoke the backlash that last year’s big redesign did, but just a few simple things that people shouldn’t have too much of a problem with.

Flickr Refines Search Results Pages

There is a lot of redesigning of Yahoo properties going on these days. Earlier today, some big changes were announced for delicious. The Yahoo homepage was recently redone of course. Now Flickr has redesigned its search results page. The company says the new design makes it easier to browse through the billions of photos and videos on the site, and to connect to the communities that can help make sense of them.

Yahoo’s Big Redesign Emerges
· 3

Yahoo is in the process of rolling out its new home page design. The design has been widely discussed since last year, but is finally making its way throughout the US.

While the design does not appear to be available to all of us yet, some have been fortunate enough to experience it, and consider it an improvement.

Google Showing Altered SERPs
· 3

Google appears to have rolled out (to what extent we’re not sure) a design change to its search results pages. The change seems to be very minor and insignificant, but Google altering SERPs is just something that can’t be ignored by the search industry.

The (hardly) noticeable changes are a little bit of padding on the left-hand side, and a slightly smaller version of the Google logo. It’s just enough to make you wonder if it’s changed or if you’re just crazy.

Can a Redesign Affect Your Search Engine Rankings?
· 19

Google’s Matt Cutts has an interesting video up (one of many) on the Google Webmaster Central YouTube channel that deals with switching to a new content management system and how that can affect search engine rankings. Someone asks:

We are changing a farily large HTML site to CMS. What are the essentials to keep in mind so that we do not lose our search rankings?

LinkedIn Does Some Redesigning of Its Own
· 1

Facebook is not the only social network doing some redesigning. LinkedIn has made some changes to users’ inboxes on the homepage.

These changes are certainly not as drastic as Facebook’s which have the community in an uproar. I might be wrong, but I don’t expect much of a backlash here. The inbox now only appears on your home page when you have unread messages (though your inbox and read messages will always be available from the left-hand navigation bar).

Twitter Redesign a Placeholder for Functionality
· 6

There’s been a lot of redesign talk lately among big names, most notably Facebook and Yahoo!. Twitter announced today that it was rolling out a new design. This design turns out to be pretty much all about aesthetics rather than improved user experience.

Don’t worry. If you think the design is missing some things that you would like to see added, Twitter is accepting feedback, and had this to say:
