MapQuest Open Roll-out Rolls On

MapQuest’s embrace of user-generated content from a topographical perspective continues with the release of additional editions of MapQuest Open.

By aggregating its data from the OpenStreetMap service, MapQuest Open allows users to interact with their applicable map, which would, according to MapQuest’s blog entry, “indicate rapid change in geographic locations, points of interest and routing.”

Rand McNally Launches iPhone App

Rand McNally has launched a free new iPhone app called “Explore America” that offers snippets of travel content, photos and videos, destination information and a daily quiz.

Explore America users will receive a “daily adventure,” which includes a description of an interesting place in North America, a locator map, and up to five photos showing the location and information about the area.

 

Lots Happening with Bing Maps Today

"Bing Maps just got more useful for developers, bus and train commuters and education advocates everywhere," a representative for Bing tells WebProNews. She is referring to a series of announcements Microsoft made today regarding Bing Maps. 

The company released two new Bing mapping apps, made additions to the Bing Transit Map, and released the final Windows Phone 7 SDK which features Bing and Microsoft Advertising.

Czechs Put Google Street View On Hold

Czech privacy officials said Tuesday they have stopped Google from gathering new images to update its Street View mapping service.

Street-View The Czech Office for Personal Data Protection (UOOU) turned down for a second time Google’s application to collect personal information in the central European country of 10.5 million, saying the process could break the law.

Rand McNally Relaunches Its Travel Site

Rand McNally has relaunched its travel website, offering new travel and destination content, video travel guides, and travel services.

RandMcNally.com now features upgraded maps and directions, information on more than 15 million points of interest, more than 2,000 destinations, and offers more than 8,000 video travel guides.

Google Launches New Major Upgrade to SketchUp

Google has launched a new major version of its 3D modeling tool SketchUp: version 8. This comes ten years after the launch of version 1.

Google says there are over a million people using SketchUp. "That’s a pretty humbling number of 3D model makers," says SketchUp Product Manager John Bacus.

Google Adds Company Logos to Locations in Google Maps

Google announced a new feature for businesses in Google Maps in the U.S. today. The feature lets businesses include sponsored map icons that appear on the maps themselves. The feature actually began in a pilot program earlier this year in Australia.

Bing Maps Integration Comes to Hotmail

Microsoft has launched some new Bing Maps integration with Hotmail. When Hotmail users create a new email message, they can insert Bing Maps data.

When a user selects "Maps and Places", a task pane opens, which lets you add new locations or interact with previously defined locations. It will default to the address you have in your Windows live profile. If you add a new place, you can store it in a Bing Maps collection and pick it from a list later.

MapQuest Lets You Send Locations To Your Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury

AOL’s MapQuest announced a partnership with Ford Motor Company today, in which MapQuest users will be able to search for destinations from the MapQuest site, and send them directly to their Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury vehicles (so long as they are equipped with the SYNC Traffic, Directions and Information service).

TomTom Taps Localeze for Local Business Listings

Localeze and TomTom have announced a partnership in which TomTom will have access to Localeze’s 14 million U.S. local search business listings for categorized points of interest. TomTom will make this content available for location content and navigation apps developers and device manufacturers.

"The number of GPS-enabled LBS subscribers is expected to take a big leap in coming years with market revenue reaching around US$ 9.8 Billion in 2013," a representative for Localeze tells WebProNews.

Bing Maps Gets Interface Enhancements

Microsoft has launched an update to the Bing Maps interface today aimed at improving readability and aesthetics.

The new interface uses cool colors, which Bing says creates a more visually appealing backdrop, helping content "pop" on the map, and provides clear differentiation for pushpins, labels, and traffic overlays.

There are new labels with larger fonts for major streets. This eliminates the need for bolding, and less attractive glows while allowing users to quickly find locations in a relevant format, Bing says.

Android Users Can Launch Google Places As Its Own App

Google has released Google Maps for mobile version 4.4, and this comes with a new dedicated "Places" icon designed to make it easier to find nearby places with updated Place Pages.

The icon appears on Android-powered devices in the app launcher along with all of the other apps. This way you can go right to Places from the homescreen if you choose to add it.

Mapquest Continues Improving New Design

Mapquest recently rolled out a complete redesign, but it didn’t stop there. This week, the site made some additional adjustments, such as Full Map View and zoom via mouse scroll.

With Full Map View, users can now collapse the left pane to view a map that’s as wide as the browser window. "This is a great option for those of you that are visual and like to see as much map as possible," says Mapquest’s Ann Koerner.

MapQuest announced that it has expanded its live traffic coverage. It now includes over a quarter-million miles of roads in major North American cities.

MapQuest is now including "key" arterials and city streets. The goal of this is to provide users with more information to make better decisions about alternate cross-town routes.

MapQuest Makes Improvements to Route Planner

MapQuest announced that it has enhanced its Route Planner product with some new features. Route Planner is a tool that lets users plan trips that include up to 26 stops, giving the quickest route and most efficient order for those stops.
