Twitter desktop and iPhone utility Tweetdeck, a popular time saver for managing your presence across multiple social networks, has released an upgrade which includes:

Google Launches Buzz APIs at Google I/O

In a session here at Google I/O called "What’s the hubbub about Google Buzz APIs," Google announced, well, Buzz APIs.

The session was aimed at "taking a deep dive into building with the Buzz APIs and the open standards it uses, which include ActivityStrea.ms, PubSubHubbub, OAuth, Salmon, and Webfinger."

Chris Chabot, developer advocate at Google announced the launch and a number of partners that have helped the company get it started. Among these: Seesmic, Tweetdeck, and Ping.fm.

Is a Lack of Search on Google Profiles Hurting Buzz?

Google’s Rick Klau points out that homepage for Google Profiles is missing a pretty obvious feature – search. While Google profiles are tied into your Google account as a whole, when it comes to Google Buzz, your Google profile is essentially your Wall. All your Buzz posts appear here, and so do any of your personal links you want people to see.

Over the last month or so, most of the discussion around social media has been mostly related to Twitter and Facebook, as both recently had their developer conferences and introduced some new things to get people talking. We haven’t heard a whole lot of discussion around Google Buzz. When we have, it’s still mostly been about privacy.

Google’s photo-sharing site got a fair degree more social this afternoon.  Now, users should find the process of sharing their pictures to be simpler, although Google’s choice of products to feature is perhaps a little on the odd side.

Google Does Some Overdue Buzz Branding with New Buttons

Google has introduced some new Buzz buttons for content providers to use. There are buttons to allow users to share content through Buzz without leaving the site they’re on, and buttons that easily allow a reader to follow a publication on Buzz.

So far, sites have had to make their own buttons, which have been tied to Google Reader, but now anyone can go here and simply create their own Buzz Buttons that Buzz user can use (even if they don’t use Google Reader).

Update 2:  Google offered the following statement: "Buzz can only expand to show whatever was in the underlying feed. For example, if an item is truncated in the feed to only include 200 characters, then Buzz will only show 200 characters."

Update 2: Buzz has gotten off to a great start in terms of attracting users. Google said in a blog post yesterday that over 9 million posts and comments had been created, and they were seeing over 200 posts per minute. Both numbers have likely grown since then.

Google Talks Spam Control for Buzz

Update: WebProNews contacted Google to find out how they handle Google Buzz spam. The company tells us:

"We have several spam and abuse checks in place for Google Buzz content. On the abuse side, we recompress images that are uploaded, and links are scanned by the same technology that helps protect Google web search and browsers that implement our Safe Browsing data. Users can also click "Report abuse" in the drop-down menu for each Buzz message. We will suspend accounts for abuse that violates our terms of service."

Google Continues to Adjust Buzz to Ease Concerns

Google has been rigorously responding to user feedback about its recently launched Buzz social media product, and adjusting the service as it sees fit. There has been a lot of criticism about user privacy associated with Buzz, and after making a few adjustments late last week, over the weekend, Google announced some more.

Gmail-Free Version of Buzz Being Considered

Update: In case there is any confusion, Google will not be taking Buzz out of Gmail. The company issued this statement after some confusion in the blogosphere:

When Google announced Google Buzz earlier this week, the company made it abundantly clear that it was interested in Buzz being as open as possible. Looking at the Google Buzz API page, you’ll see that support for Activity Streams, AtomPub, OAuth, PubSubHubbub, Salmon and WebFinger are things that are "coming soon."

Google: “Buzz” Is Not a Trademarked Term

Yesterday Google launched its new product called Google Buzz. The name immediately brought to mind a similarly titled product from another major search player – one of Google’s oldest rival’s – Yahoo. Yahoo has Yahoo Buzz, which isn’t exactly he same kind of product as Google Buzz, but it was still worth questioning why Google would choose "Buzz" as the name of its new product.
